How to Get Ready for Your Workout

Exercise is important throughout your life and is often even more important as you get older, in order to maintain strength and balance to avoid potential injuries. There’s no excuse not to get in some sort of workout, even if it’s just a 30-minute walk through the beautiful walking paths. Still, for more vigorous workouts, it is particularly important to prepare properly, from warm ups to workout clothing. Here are some tips to help make the most of your next workout.

Even if you’re just going for a walk, it’s important to have the right clothing. Keep in mind that you’re going to feel warmer once you start walking, so you may need layers, especially as we move into potentially cooler temperatures. Make sure you also have a good pair of shoes to provide the right support for your feet. If you’re doing a more strenuous workout, look for clothing that is comfortable and doesn’t bind or ride up or get in the way. You might also want to look for fabrics that help whisk away sweat from the skin.

Before you start any workout, even walking, it is important to do some stretching and warm up your muscles and joints. Without a warmup, you risk injuring yourself. By stretching, you loosen your muscles, improve your flexibility, and are less likely to be as sore after your workout.

Some days are harder to get motivated than others. Even if you’re doing your workout, it helps to have some upbeat music that you enjoy to help put more energy into your workout. Maybe you have a favorite radio station or you can create a workout playlist so that you have enough songs to get you through your workout without too many interruptions of slower songs. However, slower songs at the start and end are good to help remind you to warm up and cool down afterward.

A little planning and effort before your workout ensures that you are more inclined to get in your daily exercise and stay safer during the workout. Don’t forget to stay hydrated during the workout. It is important to drink enough water so you don’t get overheated and dehydrated. Of course, one of the best ways to stick to a workout regime is to find friends to exercise with and keep you accountable.
